May 2024 Legislative Update

Passed Assembly: New Public Education Legislation

Last month, I was proud to speak on behalf of, sponsor, and vote for A4161: the Stabilized School Budget Aid Grant Program to help restore portions of the State aid reductions affecting our public schools. Even more rewarding was having my seventh grade students from East Newark grammar school in the room!

Last month, I also sponsored legislation designed to ease the teacher shortage in the state. The Assembly passed Bill A1669, created to pave the way for enthusiastic and highly skilled educators to step into classrooms, enriching the learning experience for our children.

Introduced: Two New Bills to Help Consumers

Last month, I introduced two new bills to the General Assembly:

Stop Unnecessary Prior Authorization Healthcare Hurdles

With manufacturing shortages, patients often deal with prior authorization requirements for switching between identical prescription drugs, disrupting the patient’s treatment or jeopardizing his health. Bill A4232 would prohibit the use of prior authorization for medication under certain circumstances. This would stop delays in prescribing interchangeable drugs if the brand name drug or generic version is not available.

No More Long Waits and Fees for Car Titles

Due to reports of car dealerships and lending institutions taking up to six months to deliver titles – and even charging fees – Bill A4234 would require sellers and other secured parties to deliver certificates of ownership to motor vehicle buyers within 30 days of the performance of a contract or the terms of a security agreement. Sellers and secured parties would also be prohibited from charging a fee for the delivery of a certificate of ownership.

Latino Caucus Members Urge Creation of National Museum of the American Latino

Last month, I joined my fellow members of the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus in issuing a joint resolution that respectfully urges the United States Congress to continue progress on the creation of the National Museum of the American Latino. We are requesting that Congress reinstates the 2008 commission to continue progress towards creating the museum, and advocate for its inclusion as part of the Smithsonian Institution with its location on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
